Myths, misconceptions and the GPs who brought the help to the homeless
Dear Millers — a warm welcome to our Wednesday edition of The Mill. Today’s story is about a team of doctors, nurses and substance misuse practitioners at a GP practice in Ancoats, who specialise in providing healthcare to one of Manchester’s most vulnerable groups of people: the homeless. The specialist team was formed in 1998 out of concerns that homeless people were facing too many barriers when trying to access primary healthcare, leading them to neglect their health until they reached a crisis point and presented at A&E. Now, the service is being celebrated in a major exhibition at the Science and Industry Museum for its role in fighting for the homeless to be recognised as a vulnerable cohort, allowing them to receive the vaccine before many others in Manchester. Mollie sat down with the team to hear more about their work.
