Wait... is Manchester running out of water?
'If you are used to seeing it full, an empty reservoir can come as a shock'
Dear Millers — today’s piece is about Greater Manchester’s water supply. Most of you will have received emails and letters from United Utilities asking you to use less water recently, so we got Jack Dulhanty to find out what’s going on, and to explain where our water actually comes from. It’s a fascinating story of aqueducts, drowned villages and reservoir anoraks.
If you missed yesterday’s members’ piece, it was a cracker by Sophie Atkinson about the French novelist Michel Butor and “the most gorgeous hate letter Manchester would ever receive.” Sophie is now a part-time member of the Mill crew, popping into our office every week to help with editing, and writing cultural stories for us in her breaks between pieces for literary magazines and newspapers like the New York Times.
If there’s a show or book or exhibition you think we should send her to, please do email her (firstname.lastname@example.org).
