'When people come to university, they feel like they have to build up this image of themselves'

Manchester's students are often the subject of scorn from outsiders - none of it as biting as the satire they make about themselves

Good morning members — it’s great to be back in Mill HQ. We have a fantastic line-up of stories for you in the coming days, including a deep dive into whether the big book publishing houses are serious about having a presence in the North and a long read about the very strange dynamics that have taken over politics in Oldham.

Today’s piece is about student life in Fallowfield. Mollie Simpson has just graduated from the University of Manchester, and in one of her final weeks of uni she joined a group of her fellow students as they shot the latest season of their mock documentary “Shallowfield”. The piece offers a nice insight into a bunch of young people trying to make their mark in Manchester, and what it’s like trying to break into the creative industries here.
