Does Stockport need the tram? When I first moved back to Greater Manchester in 2004, I chose Stockport because it was on the West Coast main line and had decent bus routes into Manchester. I was told by an estate agent that the Metrolink was coming, as though that was a selling point. In the four years I lived there, it never came. It's now 2024 and Stockport still isn't on a tram route. Who is Burnham appealing to with his stated ambition to get Stockport on the Metrolink map?

I love in Stockport and the idea appeals to me. Connection s between Stockport and the city centre are great via bus and train as you rightly point out, but public transport links to other areas are pretty poor.

With my cynical hat on though, it’s also going to appeal to property developers as the look to try and get more people move in to Stockport.

That's true, I remember that from when I lived there. I had a look for the proposed route and saw a suggestion that it will be a spur from Edgeley towards south Manchester/Trafford/Media City via East Didsbury. I suppose I can see a logic in that, making it so you don't have to go into Manchester to come out again.
