Thank you so much for the moral wake up call! I suppose I'm what's currently described as a 'reductionist' and have tried a few times to cut out meat altogether without success. It's stories like this that keep reminding me of the cruelty our species perpetrates against others for (unnecessary) food. I'm often struck how farm animals are referred to as 'live stock' on cooking and farming/country life TV programmes to presumably anaesthetise us against seeing them as living, breathing animals that feel pain. Am going back to the drawing board re: my eating habits. Thanks again!

Great to hear Barbara, thanks for reading. I've never thought about the word livestock but you're right, that's a horrible term.

Thank you Joshi Herrmann for this article. I have been a veggie for over 30 years and and a vegan for 4. I cant bear to think about how these poor animals are treated and killed. If only people would think about it. We need farming/ countryside tv programmes to show the animals being slaughtered as well as the cute babies being born. I do hope this article helps people to think and try to reduce the amount of meat they eat. thanks again.

I remember being outraged some years back when I heard about major food chains like Subway buying halal meat on the grounds it was cheaper because welfare standards were lower on the grounds of religious practise etc.

Made me boycott several of the chains mamed and shamed , not that I’m anything but an omnivore.

Reading this article describing a practice that is abhorrent makes me feel the same, but how does the consumer know how the animal was dispatched? I’m passionate about less meat eating, know where it comes from and waste nothing, but unless the consumer is informed as to how the animal was killed I don’t know how to attempt to make informed consumption choices and by extension drive the disgraceful practices into the ground. Great article as usual, thought provoking, and another thing for a consumer with a shred of conscience to consider.

It might be an idea to actually inquire with the management of your local supermarkets whether they could provide information on the methods of slaughter. I intend to ask my local organic farm shops precisely about the question. Do the organic ethics end at the door to the abattoir? I suspect so. If you have such farms around Manchester, I suggest Joshi or one of his excellent people should investigate.

As for halal, if I were a pig, I'd prefer my throat slit to the so-called welfare standards and death by gassing of a modern slaughterhouse.

Really good advocacy for the poor poor pigs whose abject suffering so many are unaware of. I am grateful to see this vital topic of animal welfare covered, and whilst it cannot be expected that people will do without meat in their lives, perhaps it can be hoped that they will consider supporting the excellent Compassion in World Farming who work so hard to achieve better standards for farm animals.

I think it's great that The Mill has looked behind the scenes to present the stark facts.

Hi all, really interesting piece! Do you know where I can find the court copy for the case?
