For months, right-wing activists have been highlighting the case of a Manchester student dismissed for his unsavoury views. But big questions surround the story, like what Christian himself believes.
Excellent research and investigation of the issues. The article indicates once again the power of social media as a platform for divisive politics with a lack of factual integrity.
Very thorough Mollie. It sounds an uncomfortable conversation in parts and your persistence does you credit. The line in 2 years time he’ll be forgotten, gives hope!
A brilliant and thorough piece of investigative reporting. The Mill is the only local news I respect enough to actually take time to read. Thank you Mollie and I look forward to reading more from you.
I was studying physics at Manchester at the same time as John Christian (albeit before he used that name) so it’s a bit surreal seeing an article about him.
A man who isn’t Christian, but might be Roman Catholic, stays at home crunching Physics numbers whilst people cluster around hotels housing refugees, protesting their presence in his name because he was penalised by his university disciplinary process, and is lionised by a credulous man from Wales who probably has few, if any Jewish friends, whilst men and women of broad demographic and various ethnicity gather around University Green to vocalise their displeasure with fascists. Heartening to know that some aspects of university life don’t change, despite the hurly burly of media, WhatsApp, vloggers, bloggers, and, indeed Substack.
Excellent article, although giving someone an opportunity to defend themselves against clearly damning evidence in their own videos is possibly excessively fair journalism.

Thank you Cath!

What a great read. Incredible work.
Thanks Tom

Good work but is John Christian really only 19 and just finishing a PHd.........misguided AND precocious? Or did I misread the article??
James Harvey is 19 - John Christian didn't reveal his age because of anonymity reasons, but he told me when he started his PhD he was 22

I think it's good journalism, and it gave him enough rope to show his true colours.
