The mayor tells us about the stresses of the pandemic, how much he has changed since leaving Westminster - and why he would only go back 'to play a leadership role'
It seems that Burnham shares two fatal character weaknesses with Boris Johnson - the overriding desire to be liked and the attempts to come across as authentic. Whereas Starmer, I feel, cares about his public image. He wants to come across as professional, but doesn't care about being liked - and his priority is to persuade sufficient people to vote Labour at the next election. You couldn't be Director of Public Prosecutions as Starmer was and not have the capacity to be tough when needed.
The last thing that a country as divided as the UK is, and facing so many challenges, are politicians that put their own personal popularity first, and don't tell people what they need to know instead of what they want to hear.
I've welcomed the profiles of the different condidates for GM Mayor that the Mill has provided. The only problem is, I now have no idea who I'm going to vote for next Thursday.
So Burnham is worried about whether or not he appears authentic? I'm worried that I haven't seen any interrogation of how effective his policies have or haven't been.
Enjoyed your in-depth interview with Andy Burnham. There’s a limit to how close it’s possible to get to authenticity. It’s much easier to detect the inauthenticities of the majority of politicians providing the party line on morning media appearances.
These can often be checked against the list of characteristics of the narcissistic and sociopathic individual. Boris Johnson and Donald Trump Score highly on these. Andy seems to me to score lower on these traits but is not without strong ego strength or self confidence.
" ...Burnham never released a photo of himself taking a knee in his office" Well, that is an outstanding feature in the deluge of wokeness we've had to endure this past year. I would definitely vote for such a man :) Wanting to be liked, for that matter, I find a totally forgiveble trait, one her shares with most of his fellow humans. Lucky Mancunians

Hi Elaine, could I include part of your comment in our letters section of the Monday briefing? I just need the area where you're from. Thanks, Dani
Yes that's fine. I live in Prestwich.
