I’ve been shopping for food in Bury market for about 16 years now. It has lost a couple of important places in the last couple of years but there are still some great stalls. If you are the kind of foodie who likes to pay through the nose for beautifully presented artisan stamped food - see Manchester Christmas markets and most farmers markets - then Bury market probably isn’t for you. If you want to find some top notch food made or sourced and handled by experts, presented simply and priced affordably, then you can do a lot worse. It has some proper specialists in fish, game, cheese, fruit & veg, deli, pies, bakery and more. It might be good for The Mill to do a piece highlighting some of the great food stalls still to be found there to encourage some of your readers to give it a try.
I think this kind of market ,like Conran Street in Harpurhey are going to he dead on their feet going forward unless changes similar to the ones mentioned (more foody/indie/repurposed furniture etc are made. There is a street market in the town where I live which is on 3 times a week and under normal circumstances we have a specialist food/farmers market regularly in the summer too. What my local market is going to look like after Covid God knows , maybe it won't be there at all. Shops closing at the moment too and not just for lockdown. It's quite depressing actually. Roll on post Covid and Vaccination and let's get back to a (new normal).
