Talking about The Mill and the contrast with ‘mainstream’ news media, I wondered whether the Mill is being run and delivered by much younger people generally than the mainstream? And I also wondered if it’s this that makes it feel so much more current and immediate to me. It’s just totally more interesting! Whatever it is, I’m so glad to have The Mill, so thanks to you all and congratulations on your success.
Hey Colleen - yes it's a good point. It definitely is run by young people, mostly because when you start a new venture you can't really afford experienced people. We'd like more experience in future of course, because I think a mix is very important, but I'm glad to hear you say that our stuff feels current and immediate to you. Youth might be part of it, but I also think we work hard on our style to keep it narrative and gripping. Thanks very much for your lovely comment! I'll send it to the whole team.
Been great to see your crazy idea not just survive, but flourish. And what fantastic young writers you’ve introduced us to! Here’s to The Mill becoming a full-blown Manchester institution, and either putting the MEN out of business or (probably a better outcome) forcing them to become a newspaper again instead of a social media clickbait factory. Congrats Joshi, what you’ve pulled off is really quite something.
Hey Stuart - thanks very much for this lovely comment. I should have replied earlier but I've just finished editing the briefing etc! Grateful for your support.
Became a paid subscriber last night after reading Daniel Timms piece on Manchester’s regeneration. The Mancunian weather piece, student lockdown article and the 2 part piece on Sacha Lord have also grabbed my attention this last month. It is so refreshing to read articles that are intelligently researched and balanced, and which allow readers to make up their own minds.. such a contrast to partisan and inane journalism that dominates all national publications.
Thanks very much Zenobia, and welcome. Really glad you've come onboard and that you enjoyed those pieces. I think we've been on a good run recently - we'll try to continue that in August.
Wishing you and your excellent people all the best and a glorious future i.e. lots of new subscribers who definitely exist out there in the ether somewhere but don't know what they're missing; amazing output from all the three amazing publications ..... can't keep up with the reading of it all as I've done the true crazy and signed up to all three:) #followme
