You're all doing such great things, surely a model for 'local' news everywhere. You'll be at 10k in no time. Would love a really big bit on Burnham at some point?

Thanks very much Damian. Sorry for slow reply - I'm in India for a friend's wedding. Happy new year and good idea re: Burnham. We haven't interviewed him for a while and should probably do a proper profile.

Thanks for having the irrational optimism and turning it rational. Sometimes it’s easy to live life online and think living in any UK city is much the same. The Mill reminds me what’s special about Manchester, and not just the little corner of Manchester where I live and love.

Thanks very much Helen, grateful for this. Lovely sentiment - that's what we try to do, connect people to the bits of the city they don't see in their day to day lives. Happy new year!

Joshi

Thanks for a fine reflective end to the year. I share your "irrational optimism" and belief "local journalism is a crucial facet of society that connects us to the places we live and the people who live around us and gives us a sorely needed sense of shared reality in an atomised age." As a former Sheffielder I also subscribe to The Tribune and promise to spend the next eleven hours persuading 15 people to sign up to The Mill and ensure you do not a teetotal Hogmanay.

PS The photo depicts Holy Trinity Church, Platt Fields within sight of my Rusholme home.

Hahaha thanks Vincent, I think your lobbying might have done the trick. Thanks for your support this year across Mill and Trib and happy new year.

It's Platt church across Platt Fields I think.

Yes, I think you're right based on a few other comments. I should have recognised it given that I cycle past regularly.

Think the snowy scene is platt fields?

Yep, think that's right. Looking very lovely.

.....and “ one of those beautiful Cross St offices” you hope to have one day could have been the old Manchester Guardian building. But the Council decided it was better to get rid of a bit of Manchester heritage to replace with an arndale centre. Still, that was the 60s. Let’s hope MCC have learnt some lessons about heritage. It’s not just the listed buildings but the ones which help tell the story of our city. Liverpool is much better at it!

Yeah, such a shame that old Guardian building is gone, it looks excellent in pictures.

Really enjoy this reporting maybe do a post on the Homeless that are staying at Manchester Airport there is a Community that not everyone knows about .Burnham and Co need to answer about that and the Hostels that these Homeless people refuse to go and stay in that much they prefer the streets. Also who. Runs the Security on the Hostels.

Fantastic people, all of you! Keep it up. Could you do a comparison on the trains vs. Metrolink? I live near a train stop for commuting to work in the city centre, and the trains are awful, while the Metrolink stop (30 mins walk away from me, sadly) is excellent.

Thanks Sam. Yeah that's a great idea for a post, I'll find a writer for that.

I’m with Platt Fields and the church and we live nearby.

Really serious congratulations on all of this Joshi. The need for unbiased open journalism with no interests other than general human curiosity is huge these days. Keep going!!

Thanks very much Jennifer. 'No interests other than general human curiosity' is a great description.

Proud to be a Mill subscriber, and love to see how it's grown. Some excellent reads this year about topics I would have no clue about without you. Keep up the good work!

Joshi, you've come a long way since i first subscribed and then became a paying member. We are the beneficiaries of your vision and it's not stopped yet.

I'd encourage any new members to scroll back and read some of the earlier stories, it'll be time well spent.

Happy New Year to all staff and subscribers at The Mill .

Can I just interject with a few words of caution Joshi? Don't try to expand too fast and end up with cash flow problems. I'm sure you're way too savvy to go down this route, but I'd hate to see the Mill close down due to filthy lucre.

I also think it would be very unjust to deny yourself a drink -or two - or more if you don't make 15 new subs when if it wasn't for your vision, the Mill would not be even a twinkle in somebody's eye, let alone the thriving publication that it now is. Best wishes for a successful and happy 2024, to you, Mollie, Jack and all the other contributors.

Thanks very much Elaine. The good news is that we hit the target quickly and I was able to enjoy NYE. I appreciate our words of caution - Sophie says the same to me and is a moderating influence. I'll try to be savvy and hold back my love of expansion and risk... Happy new year :)
