Exclusive: Homicides spiked in Manchester during the pandemic, new data shows
The Mill has obtained new crime figures for Greater Manchester, revealing which areas have seen the most killings and violence in the past year
Dear members — today’s newsletter reveals how many people have been killed in Greater Manchester in the past year, where they have been killed and which areas of GM have experienced the most violent crime. We have obtained a massive dataset from Greater Manchester Police under Freedom of Information laws, and it’s the first time this kind of information has been released by the force since 2019.
Our data reporter Jacklin Kwan has been crunching it for the past couple of weeks to pull out some key trends and insights. Today we bring you a few of the headline figures, but we will be doing more analysis of the data in the coming weeks.
