Thanks, Dani - fascinating. Jenny doesn’t have quite the same look about her as the nymphs tempting Hylas in Manchester Art Gallery, but they are perhaps distant relatives - though the nymphs are definitely better at generating faux social media controversies.

Own Jenny Greenteeth was certainly alive and keeping children in check up in Rossendale a few years back. Walking with my grandmother through her childhood haunts at Goodshaw Chapel, up in the hills on the old road towards Burnley, she told me all sorts of tales and traditions of that little hamlet.

Jenny Greenteeth, I think, inhabited a nearby well of spring water, or certain lived nearby. It was as we passed it that grandma said quite nonchalantly, "Oh, and Jenny Greenteeth lived there," just as she might of any of her neighbours.

With all the new housing developments in the neighbourhood, I hope that Jenny hasn't been disturbed much. And I hope that parents who are trying to control this generation of children know how useful a working knowledge of Owd Jenny Greenteeth can be.
