'Thirty years I socialised with them locals. And they’re good people but they end up looking down on you, because of all the carrying on of the newspapers and gossipers at the pub'
This is a welcome article and one that is objective in its portrayal of the lives of the gypsies living in Bolton. Distrust of gypsies seems to be very deep-rooted and most of it based on hearsay rather than direct experience. No doubt, gypsies have their bad'uns in their community, just as we have in ours - yet somehow they are expected to be angelic and even then they still won't be accepted.
I was deeply shocked by Parris' article - being gay himself, he must have been confronted with anti gay prejudice during his life and ought to have fellow feeling with other minority groups - so why the hostility towards gypsies?

Hi Elaine, we're putting this in our letters section. What's your borough (apologies if I've asked before - bad memory!) Thanks, Dani .
No worried. It's Bury.
great article. Bolton council could learn something from this article and start by reviewing chains of communication with travellers.
