Plus: The Mill ate all the pies…apart from one

Dear readers — Welcome to The Mill’s Monday briefing: the only thing that isn’t a washout today. We trust you’ve followed government guidelines and stockpiled enough resources to get you through three whole days? Here at the Mill Office that’s what we’d call “a normal shop,” but perhaps we’re just a bunch of Doomsday-ready preppers. (A 2024 study did show that journalists are one of the most neurotic professions.)

Our weekend read was the latest edition in The Mill’s Definitive List series, perfectly timed for this cold, damp weather, which ranked the best pies and pints in the city centre. While we don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t had a read yet, we will reveal that the pie which took the crown has proved a slightly controversial choice. We also feel compelled to admit an oversight on our part, which commenters were quick — and very right — to point out:

We can only hope that the Marble Arch: a) forgive us for not at least giving their acclaimed pies a try (we know the pint would have been a 10/10 in our scoring), and b) take consolation in the fact that Manchester City Council turned down plans for a 17-storey apartment building next to their venerated former-gin palace last week. The pub’s owners, Marble Brewery, had argued the block would be "overbearing and oppressive" if approved.
